A curved spine: come back to confidence and (almost) normal movement with specialist physiotherapy

Worried about the alignment of your spine not being straight? At PYONG Rehabilitation Clinic we have a way out with a restoration programme designed specifically for the individual, in order to help balance the body, reduce the symptoms, and prevent them from getting worse.

Are you facing these signals, or are you worried about the state of a curved spine?

  • You notice that the height of the level of the shoulders, the shoulder blades, or the hips is not equal
  • You have been diagnosed with a curved spine, and are looking for an approach to treatment that is not surgery
  • The trunk looks tilted, or the clothes you wear look asymmetrical
  • You have pain in the upper back, the lower back, or the area of the hips, particularly when you have to sit or stand for a long time
  • You feel that one side of the body works harder, or that there is unbalanced use
  • You are worried about your bearing, or about a figure that may look out of proportion because of the alignment of the spine

Understanding "a curved spine" (Scoliosis) more

A curved spine is a state in which the spine twists and curves to the side abnormally, which may arise by itself without a known cause (Idiopathic Scoliosis), particularly in adolescents, or arise from degeneration (Degenerative Scoliosis) in adults, or from other causes.

Important things to know:

  • It is not only a matter of beauty: the curving of the spine affects the working of the muscles all around, causing imbalance, which may lead to pain, tiredness, and in severe cases may affect the working of the lungs and the heart
  • Treatment does not always have to be surgery: for a state of a curved spine at a level that is not severe to moderate, or in those who do not want, or cannot have, surgery, rehabilitation medicine and specialist physiotherapy are the main choice in managing the symptoms and supporting the structure

The goal is the best function: although rehabilitation medicine and physiotherapy may not be able to make a curved spine come back to being 100% straight (particularly in adults whose bones have stopped growing), the important goal is to reduce pain, improve posture, and increase strength and flexibility, so that you can live your daily life with the greatest quality, or "almost normally".

The approach to caring for the state of a curved spine at PYONG Rehabilitation Clinic

At PYONG Rehabilitation Clinic we look at the state of a curved spine in a holistic way, not merely an X-ray and then looking at the degrees. We emphasise:

  1. Assessing the true problem: we examine and assess in detail in order to find how that curvature affects the working of your muscles, joints, and movement, where the pain comes from, and what limitations have arisen
  2. Designing a programme specific to the individual (Personalized Rehabilitation Program): there is no ready-made programme for everyone. The plan of treatment will be adjusted to fit the kind and the severity of the curvature, the age, the condition of the body, and your goals
  3. Active Rehabilitation: we emphasise your taking part in the treatment through exercise that is on target, in order to create strength and balance from within, alongside adjusting behaviour and posture
  4. Preventing and slowing: the important goal is to prevent the curvature from increasing (particularly in adolescents) and to reduce the chance of complications arising in the long term

The techniques and instruments we use, for your best result

Our team of expert rehabilitation medicine physicians and physiotherapists will choose to use techniques combined suitably:

  • Scoliosis-Specific Assessment: analysing the posture, the balance of the muscles, the flexibility, and assessing the degrees of the curvature in order to plan precise treatment
  • Scoliosis-Specific Exercise Programs – SSEPs: exercise designed to build up the muscles on the weak side, stretch the muscles on the tight side, and adjust the body's perception of correct posture
  • Western Medical Dry Needling and Pain Relief Modalities: Western acupuncture/needling in order to release fascia and tender points in the muscle (trigger point/taut band), and the use of physiotherapy instruments, such as Magnetic Stimulation (PMS), in order to help reduce pain and tightness
  • Breathing Mechanics Training: helping expand the side of the chest that has collapsed, and using the breathing to help adjust the alignment of the central axis of the trunk
  • Postural Correction & Body Awareness: training you to be able to arrange your posture correctly by yourself in daily life, in sitting, standing and walking
  • Manual Therapy: such as releasing the muscles (Myofascial Release) and moving the joints (Mobilization), in order to reduce pain and tightness and increase flexibility in the areas involved
  • Core Stabilization: because strong core muscles are the important foundation of a stable spine

The goal of the treatment: towards the quality of life you want

When you receive treatment with us, you will receive the following benefits:

  • Better bearing and posture: reducing the imbalance of the shoulders, the hips, and the trunk, increasing confidence in your figure
  • Reduced pain: relieving pain in the back, the neck, the shoulder blade, or the hips that arises from the imbalance of the structure
  • Better movement: increasing flexibility and strength, so that you can do various activities more nimbly
  • Slowing the increase of the curvature: reducing the chance that the degrees of the curvature will increase (very important in adolescents)
  • Living life more fully: reducing the limitations from the state of a curved spine, so that you can go back to doing the activities you like with peace of mind, or as close to normal as possible
