Therapeutic Pilates

Therapeutic Pilates is more than just exercise; it is a method of rehabilitation controlled by a doctor, using the principles of mindful movement and scientific precision. At PYONG Rehabilitation Penthouse (Gaysorn Tower, BTS Chidlom) this programme uses the Merrithew STOTT Pilates Rehab system, which is designed for patients who need structured rehabilitation.

This method differs from ordinary Pilates by emphasising medical rehabilitation, through care by a rehabilitation physician and a multidisciplinary team.

Whether you have a problem of posture, are after a stroke or Parkinson's disease, or are looking for safe exercise in old age, our Therapeutic Pilates programme is adjusted to each individual patient, in order to reinforce correct movement, restore the working of the body, and build strength in the long term.

What is Therapeutic Pilates?

Therapeutic Pilates is a clinical form of Pilates for rehabilitation. Instead of emphasising the building of strength alone, Therapeutic Pilates emphasises controlled movement, correct alignment of the body, and the safe adjustment of intensity.

With the Merrithew STOTT Pilates Rehab equipment, the patient exercises in order to develop the core muscles, flexibility, and the working of the joints, while reducing the pressure on the spine and the muscles.

It suits those recovering from injury, conditions of the nervous system, or chronic pain. Each session is supervised by a doctor, ensuring that the movement stays within safe limits. Research indicates that exercise in the form of Therapeutic Pilates may help reduce pain in the muscles and joints, improve balance, and promote the rehabilitation of the brain in patients with conditions of the nervous system.

Therapeutic Pilates is exercise for the therapeutic treatment of chronic pain by a physiotherapist, and is considered a medical treatment for which a specialist physician in rehabilitation medicine can issue a medical certificate for the patient to claim on OPD insurance and group insurance.

Why choose Therapeutic Pilates at PYONG Rehabilitation?

At PYONG Rehabilitation Penthouse our programme stands out for:

  • Care by a doctor: every assessment is interpreted by a rehabilitation physician and integrated into a plan of rehabilitation for the individual
  • Advanced technology: Merrithew STOTT Rehab gives data in greater depth and more precisely than the ordinary Pilates method
  • A comprehensive rehabilitation context: the data on the alignment of the body helps design plans of physiotherapy, occupational therapy training, and the rehabilitation of the brain
  • A convenient location: at BTS Chidlom, easy for following up the treatment

Compared with examining posture by hand or with ordinary 2D photography, Merrithew STOTT Rehab gives data that is measurable and genuinely visible, allowing our team to adjust the programme of training effectively.

How Therapeutic Pilates works

The usual order of a session:

  1. Assessment before beginning – the doctor assesses the posture, the pain, and the capacity for movement
  2. Warm-up – breathing and activating the core
  3. The training – movements of Therapeutic Pilates, adjusted to the patient
  4. Consultation – analysing and correcting the posture
  5. Cool-down – relaxing and correcting the posture

Most patients will feel the muscle working slightly, or stretching, but everything is safe and does not cause injury. The technology makes the movement visible and allows it to be corrected in no more than 5 minutes.

The groups that may benefit

  • Neck and shoulder pain from abnormal posture
  • Problems of the spine (a slipped disc, degenerated bone)
  • Correcting posture from office work
  • Degenerated or stiff joints
  • Lower back pain from a tilted posture
  • Abnormal balance after stroke
  • Weakness of the muscle with age
  • Problems of balance from unbalanced alignment of the body
  • Chronically abnormal walking or standing
  • Preventing injury of the muscles and joints in older adults

How often should it be done?

  • 2–3 times a week is advised in the beginning period
  • Reassessment every 4–6 weeks, according to the condition and the plan of treatment
  • Each individual patient has a suitable frequency; the doctor will adjust it according to the symptoms and the plan of rehabilitation

When will a result be seen?

  • Immediately: visual data is obtained on posture and the balance of the muscles
  • Within a few weeks: better balance, reduced pain, or easier movement may be noticed
  • Long term: when the plan is followed continuously, posture and balance may improve within 4–6 weeks or more, depending on the training and the condition of the body

Safety and points to be careful of

  • Safe technology and equipment are used
  • Sessions are adjusted to suit older adults or patients with limited movement
  • It does not suit those whose physical condition is unstable; the doctor will screen beforehand
  • The team cares for safety and privacy throughout the training

The cost

Therapeutic Pilates at PYONG Rehabilitation Penthouse starts at 2,000 baht per session. The patient must pass assessment by a doctor before beginning a package, so that the plan is adjusted suitably and safely.
