At PYONG Rehabilitation Penthouse on floor 11 of Gaysorn Tower (BTS Chit Lom) we provide neuromuscular electrical stimulation that is not invasive (NMES)
This therapy is designed to support the restoration of neural capacity, particularly for those who have problems concerning the nervous system, weak muscles, or those recovering after surgery

Our Multidisciplinary team, namely rehabilitation medicine physicians, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, dietitians, and nurses, together create a plan of treatment specific to the individual that suits you

What is NMES?

NMES (Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation) is a technique of therapy that uses an electrical current in order to stimulate the muscles, causing contraction and helping improve the strength and the capacity of the muscles. Unlike general electrical stimulation, NMES stimulates the motor nerves directly, so it suits those who have muscle atrophy or weakness from a state of the nervous system

At PYONG Penthouse Clinic we use the latest generation of NMES equipment, a leading technology that can adjust the parameters of stimulation to suit each patient

Why choose NMES at PYONG Penthouse Clinic

The NMES of PYONG Rehabiltation is the most modern NMES technology from Switzerland, supporting the stimulation of muscles up to 4 channels (4 Channels). It has a technological system, with the MI (Muscle Intelligence) system that scans and adjusts the values of stimulation according to the condition of each person's muscles, making the treatment more precise, comfortable, and effective. It also uses a biphasic square wave current that stimulates immediately and does not let the nerves become used to the current, so that a deeper and more effective muscle contraction is obtained than with general NMES machines. It can stimulate more muscle fibres than contracting the muscle by yourself. It has diverse programmes for building strength, endurance, restoration, reducing pain, relaxing massage, and rehabilitation medicine

Besides this, choosing NMES at PYONG Penthouse Clinic means you will receive care by physicians expert in the restoration of capacity together with a multidisciplinary team

The clinic is located in the heart of Bangkok, near BTS Chit Lom in Gaysorn Tower, convenient to travel to

Our NMES equipment is the latest generation of technology and can have its values adjusted to suit each patient, helping make the restoration more effective than the old form of treatment

How does NMES work?

  • The steps: electrode pads are placed on the skin in the area of the muscle to be stimulated
  • The process: the device sends an electrical current that stimulates the motor nerves, so that the muscle contracts
  • The duration: each session takes about 20–30 minutes
  • The sensation: patients usually feel a "slight tingling" or a "pulsing", but in general it is tolerable

This process may help increase the strength of the muscles, reduce spasticity (spasticity), and help improve movement

The groups who may benefit from NMES

  • Weak muscles after cerebrovascular disease (stroke)
  • Those injured in the spinal cord
  • Patients with Multiple Sclerosis
  • Patients with Parkinson's Disease
  • Muscle atrophy from disuse
  • Abnormality of the nervous system that affects movement
  • Restoration after surgery
  • Chronic pain
  • Problems of balance and walking
  • Peripheral neuropathy

Research and academic evidence concerning NMES

  • Research from the Journal of Rehabilitation Research and Development found that NMES helps increase the strength of the muscles and movement in those injured in the spinal cord
  • Research in Neurorehabilitation and Neural Repair states that NMES may help reduce spasticity and improve the working of the muscles in patients after a stroke

Although the results differ according to the individual, research indicates that NMES is part of a useful programme for restoring neural capacity

How often should NMES be done?

  • Normally: 2–3 times a week
  • The frequency depends on the condition of the body and the goals of treatment
  • The rehabilitation physician will assess and create a plan of treatment specific to the individual

When will a result be seen?

  • Short term: the muscle may be felt beginning to be activated and the spasm reduced after a few sessions
  • Long term: increasing the strength and the function of the muscle may take 4–6 weeks of regular therapy
  • Following the doctor's plan continuously is important for the best result

Safety and precautions

NMES is safe when used by an expert, but it does not suit those who have the following conditions:

  • A Pacemaker or an electronic device implanted in the body
  • Pregnancy
  • Cancer being treated
  • An open wound or infection in the area of stimulation
  • Severely limited cognition or understanding

Before beginning NMES, an assessment by a rehabilitation physician must be passed, for safety and suitability

The cost

  • NMES at PYONG Penthouse Clinic starts at 4,600 baht per session
  • The price depends on the complexity of the symptoms and the length of the therapy
  • There must be an assessment by a doctor before buying a package, in order to determine the most suitable plan

FAQ

  1. What is NMES?
NMES (Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation) uses an electrical current to stimulate the muscles, so that the muscles contract and it helps increase strength
  2. Who suits NMES?
Those who have problems of the nervous system, weak muscles, or who are recovering after surgery may benefit
  3. How long does each session take?
About 20–30 minutes, depending on the condition of the body and the goals of treatment
  4. Is NMES safe?
In general it is safe when used by an expert, but it does not suit those with a pacemaker, those who are pregnant, or those with an open wound in the area of stimulation
  5. How often should NMES be done?
Normally 2–3 times a week, but the doctor will adjust it according to the condition and the goals of each individual
