Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2025–2030

In 2026 the government of the United States published its latest dietary guidance, under the name Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2025–2030, which is considered one of the largest changes of direction in food policy. The substance of this guidance is a call for Americans to turn to consuming "Real Food", food that is natural and genuinely nutritious, in order to meet the widespread chronic conditions of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease that are steadily becoming a health crisis for the country.

The thinking behind this new guidance begins from the fact that the present food system encourages people to consume food that is too highly processed, and fast food high in sugar, salt, and bad fat, until it has become the "Standard American Diet", which is one of the important causes of these chronic conditions. Solving the problem has to begin with what is closest at hand: choosing food at every meal so that it is of good quality and more complete in nutrients.

The substance of DGA 2025–2030

1. High-quality protein at every meal

This guidance emphasises consuming protein at every meal from various sources, both from animals, such as meat, chicken, fish, and eggs, and from plants, such as lentils, nuts, and seeds, and sets a target of consuming protein at 1.2–1.6 grams per 1 kilogram of body weight per day, in order to support the building of muscle and the recovery of the body.

2. Vegetables and fruit of many colours every day

It advises consuming at least 3 servings of vegetables and 2 servings of fruit a day. Where necessary, frozen or tinned vegetables and fruit with no added sugar can be chosen, in order to increase the nutrients and the fibre that have an important part in the digestive system and in overall health.

3. Good fats and full-fat milk

This guidance also promotes consuming good fats from natural foods, such as olive oil, nuts, and avocado, and allows milk and full-fat dairy products to be part of good nutrition, setting the consumption of saturated fat at no more than 10% of the day's energy.

4. Whole grains and fibre

Whole grains should be chosen instead of refined ones, with a target of consuming 2–4 servings a day, which gives a high amount of fibre, helps reduce the risk of chronic conditions, and supports the digestive system to work better.

5. Reducing processed food, sugar, and salt

This book of guidance advises avoiding ready-made foods with additives, a sweet taste, and high sodium, such as snacks, fizzy drinks, and frozen food, and says that consumption of added sugar should be limited to no more than 10 grams per meal for good health.

6. Drinks and alcohol

It advises drinking water mainly and reducing the consumption of sweet drinks, while the consumption of alcohol should be done carefully and in a limited way, particularly in the groups that should not drink, such as those who are pregnant or those with a related health problem.

Overall, DGA 2025–2030 tries to "go back to the basis of genuine food", so that consumers have guidance on choosing food that is easy to put into practice, and for a good result in health in the long term, not emphasising calories or complex theory alone but emphasising the quality and the naturalness of the food above all.
