Office syndrome, the problem of chronic pain from behaviour

Dr Thanis Tandamrongpong, or Dr M, a physician specialising in rehabilitation medicine, has revealed his philosophy of caring for patients, giving importance to prevention first and emphasising treatment that leads to a result in the long term (Long Term), particularly in the group of pains that arise from the way of life.

Dr M gives particular attention to the care of pain in the group of office syndrome and sports injuries. The symptoms met often in young people who work long hours are pain in the neck, the shoulder blade, the shoulder, and the back, which is the result of sitting at work for a long period and a lack of building up the strength of the muscles.

Exercise and adjusting posture are the best prevention

Dr M emphasises that the care of pain must begin with prevention, since each patient has a different lifestyle, so the advice must be suitable for each individual.

At present the trend of exercise is strongly on the rise, and it is the main instrument in preventing disease in rehabilitation medicine:

  1. Building up the strength of the muscles: exercising regularly helps build up the strength of the muscles throughout the body, as well as within the mind, which will result in the various pains being reduced in the future
  2. Slowing degeneration: having strong muscles also helps slow the degeneration of the body
  3. Arranging the posture suitably: adjusting the posture at work and in daily living so that it is correct is another important key in preventing repeated injury

Combined treatment for a long-term result

When a patient has chronic pain (such as lower back pain), the treatment will consist of the use of various procedures in order to reduce the pain quickly, alongside advising exercise and stretching

  • Procedures to reduce pain: diverse technologies are used in order to reduce the pain, such as Shockwave, PMS (stimulation with electromagnetic waves), High Power Laser, as well as
  • Traditional treatment, such as needling (Dry Needling)
  • Therapeutic Exercise: exercise designed specifically for prevention and treatment, such as Aerobic, Weight Training, and Stretching

Dr M emphasises that even though procedures are carried out until the pain is reduced, if the patient still goes back to the same daily routines without exercise to build up strength, the result of the treatment will not be sustainable.

Giving a better quality of life

As a rehabilitation medicine physician, Dr M believes that his role is to make the patient come back to having a better quality of life, by not only treating the disease, but also treating the health and the mind of the patient, as well as of the people around them, because when the patient improves, the people around them will have a better quality of life as well.

"I would like people to love themselves more, to care more about the health of both their body and their mind, so that we can have a good quality of life and go on living effectively."
